Welcome to HEGL!

The Heidelberg Experimental Geometry Lab

Research Station: Geometry+Dynamics, Uni-Heidelberg

What is HEGL?

  • A component, created in 2021 and developed in collaboration with HITS, of the Research Station: Geometry+Dynamics located at Heidelberg University.
  • A space for students and faculty to engage in experimental mathematics.
  • A community that brings together researchers of all levels.
  • A website with a database of pedagogical resources.
  • A member of Geometry Labs United, an association which works to promote research and public interest in geometry.

The Lab

HEGL is an inclusive space, inviting all to learn and have fun.

Our team:

  • Faculty Members
  • Research Assistants
  • Students

Our research topics range from fundamental research in mathematics to applications in other sciences.

Equipment

Located in Mathematikon, the Lab provides high quality equipment to engage in experimental mathematics.

Our activities

Every semester, we offer the following activities:

  • Seminars
  • Research projects
  • Internships

HEGL seminars

  • Two regular Student (Pro)Seminar: Illustrating mathematics (Winter) and Teaching Mathematics (Summer).
  • A Community Seminar for colloquium-style talks.
  • Research seminars and reading groups.

The 2023 WS Student Seminar: Geometry meets Algebra (symmetries).

Praktika

(Undergraduate Research Experience)

HEGL provides support for semester-long projects for BA and MA students: mentorship, access to the Lab’s resources.

The output can be:

Internships

We offer BOGY internships for high school students.

They come to the lab for one or two weeks and work on a project involving experimental mathematics and visualisation.

Outreach

We also engage in various activities designed to communicate mathematics to the broader public:
